Is God Involved in Political Elections Today?

Now that the American elections are over the blaming begins. The loser blames the winner for cheating, fraud, deception, etc. The winner will blame the loser for losing badly, dividing the country, and causing the political gridlock for the next four years.

Eventually, God will be blamed (as he most always is). Some people blame God for the winner saying: “God in his sovereignty sets up presidents and kings. He chose the winner. It is all in his irresistible control. The king’s heart (and, apparently, the voting box) are in the hands of the Lord.” So, according to these folks, God is the great conspirator.

Sometimes God is blamed for the loser; they say, “This loss is a sign of the times. The beginning pangs of God’s judgment on a country filled with moral depravity, ignorance, and godlessness. If we don’t humble ourselves and pray God will turn his back on us and take away our blessings.” According to these folks, God’s judgment by ballot box makes us all losers.

Both of these above are wrong to blame God.

God’s Operation During This Dispensation:

The Bible rightly divided clearly teaches us that God is not to be blamed for the choices of ignorant, rebellious, and unsaved humanity (Rom 3:3-4).

We also learn that God has not been bringing in his kingdom for 2000 years, nor are we living in the times of prophetic fulfillment. Rather He is at this time declaring free salvation to all through the preaching of the cross (not politics).

God is not today operating according to Dan 2:21-23 nor Matthew 24:3-6 today.

“And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: 22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him. 23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter.” (Daniel 2:21-23)

“And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? 4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. 5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. 6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.” (Matthew 24:3-6)

Both of the above passages describe God as He worked under the covenants with Israel and the Gentiles in “Time Past.”

Being strangers of the covenants means we are not in the conditional national relationship with God as was Israel in time past.

“That at that time ye (Gentiles) were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:” (Ephesians 2:12)

American presidents have never inherited the king of Israel’s covenant promises, and our country does not have a covenant with God.

All genuine Christians do have all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ (Eph 1:3). These are not blessings God gives and takes away according to our works or political elections. They are freely given by His grace in Christ.

“He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things (pertaining to life and godliness)?” (Rom. 8:32)

We are not living in the time of judgment, conditional covenants, nor God’s yet to come ‘wrath’ on the world.  So. God does not Set-up mankind’s political elections today? They are irrelevant to His eternal purposes. During today’s dispensational age of God’s pure grace… men are free to choose… to do what they want… to ignore God and pursue evil or not… but then reap the consequences of their decision. God is not today intervening in the affairs of men. God’s knowledge of future happenings does not mean He then intervened to cause the happening we see. The evils we see are the full blossoming of the fruit of Sin run amok in mankind. God’s on great intervention was the giving of His only Son for the sins of the world.

It is for this reason that I, just this week, canceled my scheduled automatic giving to ‘The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’ only because with Billy’s son, Franklin, taking over, it is working to political activism. When I phoned to cancel, I was taken to task by the man who answered to cancel my giving… but I asked him to give me Scripture from Paul that says I need to be politically involved beyond my responsibility to vote. Even Jesus never encouraged the overthrow of the Romans. I do however support his Franklin’s ‘Samaritan’s Purse’ ministry for their good work. Sadly, the gospel of God’s grace is more and more taking back seat to political activism among Christians.

Our Responsibility:

We are representatives of a foreign embassy trying to make all men see the mystery of Christ. God has made us his ambassadors.

“Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.” (2 Corinthians 5:20 (KJV)

Rather than fear God’s judgment or the course of this world we have the doctrinal understanding that we are at peace with God through Jesus Christ:

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:” (Rom. 5:1)

We stand in that position by grace and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God (which will not be the result of any political election).

“By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” (Rom. 5:2)

As ambassadors we should know that God has given us responsibility to operate with liberty in a world that has rejected him.

Although the world turned its back on God two thousand years ago, God has not turned his back on the world. God in Christ put “reconciliation” in place, now available to “all men.”

God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing (counting) their trespasses (sins) unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.” (2 Cor. 5:19)

It is the responsibility of the church to perform the ministry of God’s reconciliation to a dying world. It has always been, and it will always be, til He comes (Titus 2:11-13).

People have asked how mid-Acts right division affects political elections. An important affect is our response to the outcome; it neither destroys us nor is it the source of our strength (Phil 4:12-13; 2 Tim 2:1).

“I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:12-13)
“Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 2:1)
