Part 1 of 6 – Introduction

This Article is part of a multi-part Study Series called Free To Be Married to “Another”.

Romans 7:1-6 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? (Man here is the Old Man (self) of Rom 6:6 below.)

2For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but IF THE HUSBAND BE DEAD, SHE IS LOOSED from the law of her husband.

3So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but IF HER HUSBAND BE DEAD, SHE IS FREE FROM THAT LAW (HIS LAW); so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

4Wherefore, my brethren, YE ALSO ARE BECOME DEAD to the law by the body of Christ (We died with Christ, see Rom 6:3, 6.); that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead (made alive), that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

5For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were (empowered) by the law, (Sin) did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. 6But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Romans 6:6-7 (AMP) We know that our old (unrenewed) self was nailed to the cross with Him in order (so) that [our] body [which is the instrument] of SIN MIGHT BE MADE INEFFECTIVE AND INACTIVE FOR EVIL, that we might no longer be the slaves of sin. 7 For WHEN A MAN DIES, HE IS FREED (LOOSED, DELIVERED) FROM [THE POWER OF] SIN [among men].

All the physical creation and all of the issues of domestic life of families are ordained to be used by God for the purpose of revealing Himself and His relational plan for believers. We see this in Jesus’ parables of the vine tree transferring its life to the abiding branches (John 15:1-5) and others. These are figurative of the believer’s relationship with God.

  • As His literal children, we are born of Gods spiritual loins, whereby we “cry Abba Father” (Rom 8:16). Paul also writes of believers growing up to be genuine “sons of God: (Rom 8:14).
  • We are “the Church, which is His body.” We are the members of His body,” relating to Him as our head. Relationally, we are each His body members, dependent upon Him “as” our “Head.”
  • The marriage of a man and woman I similar. The male/female marriage relationship is a shadow of the reality of the believer’s intimate spiritual relationship with God. Every believer is intended to be as a dependent spouse of the Lord, depending upon him as a woman does her husband.

Therefore, in this series I am addressing the spiritual relationship of believers and the Lord as if He were their husband. In the context of this Romans 7:1-6 (above), the individual members of “the body of Christ,” whether male or female, are metaphorically seen “as if” we were Christ’s spouse. I emphasize the words “as if” Christ’s spouse because the church is not Christ’s bride described in Revelation 21:22. The Bride in fact is a believing Israel.

We of the church today are closer to Christ than a bride or spouse can ever be – we each are literally “members of His body” (Eph 5:30) – we are one with Him (1Cor 6:17). The believer’s relationship of spiritual union with Christ is the issue is the issue in this important portion of scripture. In the context of earthly relationships, the husband represents Christ, as our spiritual Head (2Cor. 11:2)…and the wife represents the believer as a properly dependent and trusting spouse of Christ as if He were her husband.

Many Christians try to apply Romans 7:1-6 to marriage issues in the earthy realm but that is not the point of this Scripture. It’s not at all addressing the right or wrong concerning Christians divorcing and remarrying, those are temporal matters. This speaks to God’s eternal plan for the believer’s spiritual union with Christ. Christ is our “Head,” and we may relate to Him as if He were our husband, upon whom we are dependent as His submissive spouse.
