Part 1 of 6 - "The Measure of Faith"

This Article is part of a multi-part Study Series called Understanding Faith.

It is clear from the verse below that every person born into the world has received a "measure of faith" from God.

Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me (Paul), to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure (Gk., metron, portion) of faith.

Actually, we've all lived by our "measure of faith" since we were born. Trust is faith in action; therewith we trust that the oncoming car will not cross the median and run into us. We trust that there will be water in our tap when we turn it on, and that we will be here tomorrow.

Of course many of us, and in fact most of us, come to a degree of anxiety as our faith... in man, the world, its governmental and other systems of provision, and we ourselves are... not really worthy of our trust. Many of us then trust in ourselves all the more, have resorting to rigidly trying to control every aspect of our lives, hoping to gain some degree of security... but still there is the sleepless nights and stress.

This is because deep down we know we can't really control anything... neither our health, our wealth, or our relationships. So, what of this "measure of faith" that we are told is in us? That "measure of faith" remains in us, but we've begun to see... that in which we've trusted is not worthy of our trust.

For some the folly of trying to make ourselves secure leads us to find Him who is our security. It is the diminishing of our faith in that which is not God that brings us to use this "measure of faith" properly. The faith of some is used properly when they hear the gospel's truth of salvation available by placing our measure of faith in Jesus Christ as savior. Such a person believes the words that they have heard and are thereby saved from perdition (judgment). Then, as their in the Lord's care and provision, their faith grows, saving them from insecurity. The moment they initially believed they also simultaneously received Christ's own "Spirit of life" to eternally dwell within them, to be their peace and rest. They then have come to peace with God and they have Christ's peace within them... so long as they trust Christ as their all. As we learn to cast our cares upon Christ we are unburdened. It was Jesus who said;

Matthew 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I WILL GIVE YOU REST. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

This then is why we as believers proclaim the truths of  "the word of God" to the lost... it lightens their path, producing productive faith to the saving of men's souls.

That "measure of faith" that is in every man springs forth when we hear truth of "the word of God." Our then heart leaps within us, witnessing to the truth and hope of what we have heard.

Romans 10:17  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

This "measure of faith" is what I call objective faith... applying to all men... but it is only according to their free will choice as to how they use it.

Yet, their is a deeper faith that grown in us as we proceed in this life of faith. That we will discuss in the next installment. This also is the work of God.

Philippians 2:13  For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
