Part 4 – We Can Rest in Our “New Garment”

This Article is part of a multi-part Study Series called The "At Rest" Christian.

The 2nd of the four “new” items in Jesus’ parables of the “new garment” and “new wineskin” is the “new garment” as seen here. “No man putteth a piece of a new2 garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new2 maketh a rent (tear), and the piece that was taken out of the New2 Agreeth Not With The Old (garment).” (Luke 5:36).

Here in Luke 5:36 is the Greek, kainos2, is used for the word “new” in the new garment.” Vines says; “new” here is as to its “quality, as to its kind, nature, or essence.” Such a righteous garment became new with the Cross of Christ, never having existed before. Something radically “new” came to be.

As we saw in the last installment, from His resurrection onward Jesus is likened to the fully processed “cloth” necessary for our new whitened garment” of righteousness. Jesus’ righteousness is now available as the “new garment” to clothe all who will trust in Him… to receive

1) the cleansing work of His cross (1Cor. 6:11, Titus 3:5), and

2) the declaration of our current standing as being “Holy and unblamable” before the Father God, “in Christ” (cf. Eph. 1:3-4), and

3) His resurrection life… “by grace through faith” in the truth of “the word of God” (cf. Col. 1:27)

“New” sometimes is the Greek “neos,” meaning new as to time, recently made.” Yes, the cross of Jesus Christ eternally existed in the heart of God, but it was only 2,000 years ago that Jesus of Nazareth actually died and resurrected as the “new (whitened) cloth” of our “new garment,” to cloth all believers with His righteousness.

The “fig leaves” of Adam and Eve were insufficient to cover sin. An innocent blood sacrifice that God provided covered their sin. In the O.T. innocent animals that were sacrificed daily To Cover Sin. But there came a bloodwashed “garment” as seen by “Christ” who “Taketh Away All Sins of the world” (John 1:29)

“Namely, the righteousness of God which comes by believing with personal trust and confident reliance on Jesus

Christ. [And it is meant] for ALL who believe …” (Romans 3:22 (AMP)

Today, every genuine believer, no matter how terrible his or her life may have been or still may be, became immediately clothed with the “new garment” of the “righteousness of God in Christ Jesus” at the very moment they first believed. Simultaneously, believers are placed into Christ’s “body,” and by Regeneration, they possess His life in them.

(Christ) In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,” (Ephesians 1:13)

For by one Spirit are we all baptized (set) into one body (of Christ), whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.”(1 Corinthians 12:13)

Only the risen Christ as our “new garment” forever satisfies God’s righteous requirement, justifying and acquitting us... declaring us free of all our sin-debt, even though we have or may still at times commit acts of sin.

Adam and Eve tried to cover their nakedness themselves using the fruit of the ground – “fig leaves.” But that covering did not fully satisfy God’s righteous requirement, which calls for the shed blood of an innocent one… “for the remission of sins.”

“almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.” (Heb. 9:22)

So, in the case of Adam and Eve, God Himself clothed them with the skins of an innocent animal to cover their now recognized nakedness, covering their sins until the cross would fully take away those sins. Only the proper “new garment” constructed of the fully “fulled” (whitened) cloth that satisfies the Father will do. Christ is the “new cloth” of our “new garment.”

  • Before the Cross: “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of (animal) skins, and Clothed them. (Gen. 3:21) “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are Covered.” (Rom. 4:7)
  • After the Cross: Paul wrote of Israel; “(Jesus) Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are (of the) PAST, through the forbearance (patience) of God; (Rom. 3:25).

To the “body of Christ” today, Paul wrote “as many of you as have been baptized (placed) into Christ have Put On’ Christ.” (Gal. 3:27); ye are dead, and your life is Hid With Christ In God.” (Col. 3:3).

We might also note in Rev. 6:11; 7:9 that the martyrs who are to be saved out of the Great Tribulation will all by their faith in Messiah have washed their Robes… Made “White’ In The Blood Of The Lamb (Rev. 7:13-14).

Today, we are clothed in the righteousness that is of Christ as our “new garment,” and able to come near, having access to God.

“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith…” (Hebrews 10:22)

Jesus is both the “new (processed) cloth,” and our “new (whitened) garment” of righteousness. He is the believer’s “new garment,” made white by the blood of “the Lamb of God.”

Isn’t it wonderful to see how consistent the Scriptures are in this matter of our “new garment” that God has provided for believers, clothing them in Christ’s righteousness.

as many of you as have been baptized (set) into Christ have put on Christ. (Gal. 3:27)

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that (clothed) in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Cor. 5:21)

The 3rd of the (4) four new items in Jesus, parables of the wineskins and garments is the "new wine."

In previous installments we saw how the blood of Jesus was shed to wash the believer's robes, making it white. Christ is our newly whitened garment. Christ now cloths us with His righteousness. This was to satisfy God's requirement, making a way for us to approach God. Now we will see how God satisfies the believer. God planned that believers would be satisfied with the "new wine."

" ... Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved." (Matt 9:16-17)

The word "new" in the "new wine" here is the Greek "neos," meaning "new as to time, recently made. This "new wine" was recently produced to satisfy the believer. The Father was and is satisfied by the "new garment," which is Christ crucified for us. But now, the Father SATISFIES us, satisfying our every need with the NEW WINE of Christ's life as the fruit of the cross, dispensed into the believers.

The work of Jesus was upon at the Cross. By the cross He was able to flow out to be both blood, and water.

34But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. John 19:34

We see two (2) items in our text above that flowed from Jesus;

  1. Jesus' "blood" flowed from His side for our redemption. His blood forever washes us, to reconcile us to God. His blood whitens our "new garment" and secures our relationship with the Him.
  2. The "water" that flowed from Jesus, side at the cross, now flows to us as His very life. Christ His self  is now the "water of life" and now "the Spirit of life" (Rom 8:2a, 2Cor 3:17). The out-flowing of the water of His life comes into us to be life in us, personally.

We have a mutual indwelling with Christ as seen in this verse - we in Christ and His Spirit in us.

13For by one Spirit are we all (collectively) baptized into one body (Christ's body… and have been all (each individually) Made To Drink Into One Spirit (to satisfy our inward need). 1 Cor. 12:13

In 1Cor 12:13 (above)  we see that every believer has been "Made To DRINK Into One Spirit." Our righteous garment was made possible by Christ's blood that was shed for us. The "water" that flowed from His side represents the "new wine" of His "Spirit" and "water of life" within us. His indwelling Spirit enliven us, empowers us and inwardly teaches and guides us. Jesus is thus referring to the newly available "Spirit of life" in believers, born of His resurrection life, as the "new wine." In 1Cor 12:13 (above) the Spirit baptizes or places us "into" Christ's body positionally – we are thus covered with the "new garment," But, Paul also says we have been made to "drink into" His "Spirit of life." We took His "Spirit of life" into our spirit once and for all time – now we are now "one spirit" with Him (1Cor 6:17).

20At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me (objective), and I in you John 14:20

Consider that an orange must be worked on in order to become juice. Jesus was worked upon at the cross to release His life. Thus He "became the life-giving spirit." 1 Corinthians 15:45 So it is written: "The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.

Christ now is "that Spirit."  2 Cor. 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit… We may receive Him; drink Him in, His "Spirit of Life" as our new inward eternal life and satisfaction. One initial drink - fills our spirit with His life. We're completely supplied in our spirit (Col. 2:10)

14whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. John 4:14

37… If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly (spirit or innermost being) shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) < Because Jesus was still not fully processed! John 7:37-39

Our drinking initially was to take His "Spirit of life" into our human spirit - "that which is born of the Sprit is spirit" (John 3:6). We are now joined with the Lord's Spirit within our human spirit. "He that is joined to the Lord now is one spirit" (1Cor 6:17).

Now He desires to flow from our spirit into our soul to renew us and satisfy us.

When we as a soul's will yield to the Lord in our daily living we take Him into our soul; we are being filled with His influence as wine influences the drinker. Our soul then comes under the influence of the Christ's Spirit ruling  as He flows from our spirit. Drinking in the spirit then is indication of our… dependence upon Him… as we to yield to Him. Drinking Him in is to take Him as Lord in place of our independent soul-self. One drink at our rebirth filled our spirit with all that He is, but Paul says we also need to "be filled with the Spirit" in soul.

18And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Ephes. 5:18
