Part 5 – Romans 6 - Our Co-death With and “In Christ”

This Article is part of a multi-part Study Series called Romans Road of Core Dispensational Truth.

The first aspect is of our salvation via Christ’s cross-work is that Christ died for us to redeem and reconcile us – but then also He died as us to liberate us from the Law and Sin’s dominion over us.

Romans 6:1-23 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

3 Know ye not (don’t you know), that so many of us as were baptized (immersed) into Jesus Christ (See 1Cor 12:13) were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into (His) death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (See 2Cor 5:17)

5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of (identifying with) his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

6 Knowing this, that our ‘old man’ is crucified with him, (so) that the body of Sin might be destroyed (Gk. kartargeo, Made of No Effect), (so) that henceforth we should not serve (be slaves to) sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin (freed from Sin’s dominion).

(cf., Eph 4:22 That ye put off (lay aside) concerning the former conversation (way of life) the Old Man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts (desires);

Eph 4:23-24 …be renewed in the spirit (disposition) of your mind; 24And that ye put on (Gk. enduo sink into), the New Man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.)

8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with (Gk. en, in) him: 9Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10For in that he died, he died unto Sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11Likewise reckon (consider) ye also yourselves to be Dead indeed unto Sin, but Alive unto God through (in unbroken union with and in) Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 (Therefore) Let not Sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts (strong desires) thereof. 13Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin (Sin’s impulsive lusts): but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your (body) members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

14Sin shall NOT have Dominion over you: for (because) ye are Not under the Law, but Under Grace.

(NOTE: 1 Corinthians 15:56b the strength of sin is the law. (< from which we have been freed.)

15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants (Gk. doulos, slave) ye are to whom (whether to Satan or Christ) ye obey; whether of Sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

17But God be thanked, that ye were (in ‘time past,’ read Eph 2:2-3) the servants of Sin, but ye have obeyed (Gk. hypokouo, listened) from the heart that form of doctrine (instruction) which was delivered you. 18 Being then Made Free From Sin (from Sin’s power and dominion), ye became the servants of righteousness.

19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity (Gk. astheneia, disease, infection) of your flesh: for as ye (in time past) have yielded your (body) members servants (as slaves) to uncleanness and to iniquity (Sin) unto iniquity (sinful acts); even so nowyield your members’ servants to (subservient to, and entirely at the disposal of) righteousness unto holiness.

20For when ye were the servants of (slaves in bondage to) Sin, ye were free from (void of) righteousness. 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is Death. 22 But Now being made free from Sin (Sin’s dominion), and become servants (Gk. doulos, willing slaves, below) to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23the wages of sin is Death; but the Gift of God is (the) Eternal Life through (Gk., en, in) Jesus Christ our Lord. (Contrast: Sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth Death” (Jam 1:15).

A Willing Slave, see Exo. 21:1-6:  v5 if the servant (slave) shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: 6 Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.
