The Truth

The word ‘truth’ may be briefly defined as follows:

: The real facts about something

: The things that are true

: The quality or state of being true

: A statement or idea that is true or accepted as true

An enlarged definition is this.

:  Fidelity, constancy (e.g. a marriage partner who is to be “faithful and true”)

:  Sincerity in action, character, and utterance

(1) The state of being the case, fact

(2) The body of real things, events, and facts, actuality

(3) A transcendent fundamental or spiritual reality

(4) The body of true statements and propositions

These characteristic noted in the above definitions cannot really be fulfilled by any member of fallen humanity. However, the Bible offers us hope as it enlarges and reveals the meaning of “truth” as seen more precisely in these verses below.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, ‘the truth,’ and the life…” (John 14:6 (KJV)

“And the Word (Jesus Christ) was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14 (KJV)

“For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by (Gk. dia, through) Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17 (KJV)

A recurring defining word for ‘truth’ is ‘verity,’ which means that which ‘IS REAL.’ That which isReal’ may be defined as that which is ‘eternal.’ Anything less than Eternal (either in ‘fact of truth’ or that of in ‘a Person’) cannot then be said to be REAL.

The Bible makes clear that only believers who have received the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus into their human spirit can be said to have “eternal life” – the Real Life.

“And this is eternal life: [it means] to Know YOU (‘to know,’ Greek. ginosko, ‘to experientially perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand’), the only True and Real God, and [likewise] to know Him, Jesus [as the] Christ (the Anointed One, the Messiah), Whom You have sent. (John 17:3 (AMP enhanced by the author)

We are so easily deceived by what we see assuming it to be real, but the Apostle Paul addressed this common misconception.

“While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are ETERNAL.” (2 Corinthians 4:18 (KJV)

Jesus of Nazareth became the life-giving Spirit, changing His form to being invisible, the unseen reality of all realities. “And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.” (1 Corinthians 15:45 (KJV) Every believer is united to Christ within their spirit, then being really one with Him, eternally. “But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.” 1 Corinthians 6:17 (KJV)

Jesus Christ as God is the only eternal reality in all the universe. From these verses we could say Jesus is “TRUTH.” Jesus Christ, being the eternal God, is the only eternal reality and so are those person who are joined to Him.

The Bible is as unique among books as Jesus of Nazareth was among men and as He is in believing men today. The Bible is the only book that claims repeatedly and consistently to be the truth.

The Bible begins with the majestic words: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” It does not argue the case; it simply states this as what is factual.

The Bible’s sacramental introduction to the prophecies of the Bible begin with, “Thus saith the Lord,” and more than a hundred fulfilled prophecies prove that the Bible is indeed the Word of God — which is the fact of the truth that is the reality expressed in the words on its pages.

“It is the spirit that quickeneth (makes alive) ; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. (John 6:63 (KJV)

Without apology our Spirit-written Bible refers to ‘truth’ as follows.

  • The “manifestation of the truth” (IICor.4:2).
  • The “knowledge of the truth” (IITim.3:7).
  • Those who “have erred concerning the truth” (II Tim.2:18).
  • Those who “resist the truth” (IITim.3:8).
  • Those who “hold [hold down, suppress] the truth in unrighteousness” (Rom.1: 18).
  • Those who “turn away their ears from the truth” (IITim.4:4).
  • Those who “believe and know the truth” (ITim.4:3).
  • Those who “acknowledge the truth” (Tit.1:1).
  • Our Lord said to His Father: “Thy Word is truth” (John 17:17).
  • Paul wrote to those who were saved when they “heard the word of truth, the gospel of [their] salvation” (Eph.1:13).

Where the truth is concerned, the knowledge of God’s written Word is what all we need in order for us to learn of ‘THE TRUTH’ of the ONE who is ‘THE TRUTH’ (the ONE who is the ETERNAL REALITY) – Jesus Christ Our Lord, our REAL and ETERNAL LIFE.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17  That the man of God may be perfect (complete), thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV)
