Two Kinds of Knowledge in a Believer’s Experience

The “spirit of man” is unique to mankind… deposited into man for God’s intended purpose.

Zech. 12:1 … the Lord ... formeth the spirit of man within him.

Proverbs 20:27 The spirit of man is the candle (“candle” is a “lamp” holding the oil of “The Spirit”) of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly (the inner soul man).

Job 32:8 there’s a spirit in man: the inspiration of the Almighty gives man understanding.

God Himself “is Spirit”needing man to have a spirit that they might ultimately receive Christ’s Spirit

John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth (reality).

John 3:6 … born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

The Indwelling “Spirit of life in Christ” speaks “in” every believer’s own “spirit of man.”

John 8:47a He that is of (Gk., ek, born of) God heareth God’s words:

e.g., Rom 8:16 The Spirit itself (Himself) beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

TWO Kinds of Knowledge in The Believer’s Experience:

1st Knowing (Gk. eido) comes by the Spontaneous Sense of Christ’s “Spirit of life” within the believer.

2nd Knowing (Gk. ginosko) comes when God uses circumstances … to push us to abandon ourselves to trust the Intuitive Sense-Knowing and “the Word” … which brings us to Know something more of Christ and our new life in union with Christ,,, Experientially.’

While we are learning to follow the intuitive sense’ of Christ in us in accord with the written “word

  1. We know that any new sins are already “forgiven” (Col. 2:13), and not “imputed (counted) to us (Rom. 4:5)
  2. We will know the truth by the written word of truth that confirms it.
  3. We will know it is the truth by an abiding sense of peace within as we go forward.
  4. If we shun the sense of Christ within and the truth of the word, we will have a disquieting inner sense within, an inner darkness.
  5. We will have to endure the consequences of our bad choices that are made independent from Him.

Two Kinds of Knowledge (eido & ginosko) for the Christian are seen in this one verse.

1John 5:20 And weknow” (Gk. eido, already by the intuitive Spirit-sense) that the Son of God is come (into us), and hath given us an understanding, (so) that … we mayknowhim (Gk. ginosko, come to know experientially, growing in knowledge) that is true, and we are in (union with) him that is true, even (that is…) IN his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

  1. The 1st “know in 1John 5:20 is the Greek “eido” automatic, spontaneous, sense knowledge

Greek 1492, Strong’s, i-do; properly to see (literal or figurative); by implication (in the perf. only) to know: be aware perceive by any of the senses (physical or spiritual) , to see, to be sure, to understand

  1.  The 2nd “Know in 1John 5:20 is“ginosko” – meaning “to come to through learning by experience

Greek 1097, Strong’s, ghin-oce’-ko; a prolonged form of a primary verb; to know” (absolute), in a great variety of applications and with many implication (as follow, with others not thus clearly expressed):- allow, become acquainted with, come to know, get knowledge, becomeaware (of), perceive, be resolved, can speak, be sure, understand.

NOTE: “To know” the Lord experientially is as ‘Adam knew Eve,’ they ‘knew’ each other experientially, conceiving Cain and Abel. “Knew” then is an idiom for sexual intercourse, an intimate, experiential ‘knowing.’ We as believers today have an intimate relationship with God via Christ as the Spirit in us as we learn to hear, receive and live by His living “words.”

In brief, to “know” is the Greek “eido,” Strong’s Concordance, “to see, or perceive by any of the senses” - applying to physical (as to spontaneously see, smell, touch, feel, hear) or to ‘perceive spiritually.

Paul differentiates Spiritual Knowing (Gk., pneumatikos) from Soulish Knowing (Gk. psuchikos).

1 Cor. 2:10-15 But God hath revealed (unveiled) them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth (eido, intuitive, of the spirit) the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth (eido) no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of (out from and with) God; that (so that) we might know (eido, know by intuition of spirit) the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual (pneumatikos, things of the spirit) things with spiritual (pneumatikos, of the spirit). But the natural (psuchikos, man of the soul, soulish man) man receiveth NOT the things of the Spirit (Pneuma) of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know (Gk. ginosko, come to know) them, because they are spiritually (pneumatikos, of the spirit) discerned. But he that is spiritual (of the spirit) judgeth (anakrino, discerns, scrutinizes) all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

Most Christians listen to outer voices to be influenced. BUT, these outer voices most often are NOT of Christ. Thankfully, we have “the Spirit” and the revealed “word of truth” for us, found in the Apostle Paul’s epistles.

  • Husband or wife                                    These many outer voices listed are often “versus”
  • Parents & Friends                                          1) the inner Spirit-voice of Christ,
  • Religious Denominational Doctrine               2) and contrary to the revealedword of truth.”
  • Pastors & other “Intermediaries                   We act in accord with… the written “word of truth”
  • The Law of the Old Testament                        “rightly divided” (cf. 2Tim. 2:15).
  • So-called “Biblical Principles”
  • Scripture not “rightly divided”

God’s innermost voice will never violate the righteous character of God, nor His ‘written word’ for us as grace believers today. If we don’t obey His inner voice in accord with “the word of truth” we bear the Consequences of our actions.

We see “the Spirit” and “the word” together in the O.T. Temple’s “Holy place” with a “lampstand” representing “the Spirit” that cast light upon the “table of shewbread,” which represents the “the word” as our spiritual bread.

Trusting in the Spirit and the Word,’ there’s no basis for fear of being led into something sinful.

The Spirit and the Word’ is the FINAL arbiter in our walk, being “led” as a “son of God.”

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God

James 4:17to him that knoweth (Gk. eido) to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Knowing God Inwardly is intimate and versus simply knowing God’s past Acts and Ways, and the so-called Biblical Principles (laws) seen in the Bible. Many Christians prefer to live by God’s Principals and Laws, such as concerning; sowing, forgiving, baptizing, etc. But this is an erroneous arms-length relationship with God... whose Christ is so close at hand as to literally dwell within the believer’s spirit. Matthew, Mark, Luke’s gospels … speak of what Jesus of Nazareth ‘did, and John’s Gospel speaks of … who Jesus is … THE LIFE, the ‘light of life,’ ‘bread of life,’ and ‘water of LIFE,’ “the way, the truth, and the life.”

BUT Paul’s epistles speak of The Christ Who Is ‘IN US Christ, who is OUR LIFE” (Col. 3:4)

2Cor.3:17a Now the Lord is that Spirit: 1 Cor. 15:45 … the last Adam was made a quickening (life-giving) spirit.,

2 Tim. 4:22 The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Col. 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery (secret) among the Gentiles; which is Christ In You, the hope of glory:

God Has ‘Breathed’ Life Into Men on Two Occasions.

1) He breathed into Adam nostrils to be the “spirit of man” (Zechariah 12:1)

Genesis 2:7 … Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (Aramaic, chay = lives); and man became a living soul.

2) After His resurrection, Jesus Christ Imparted His Resurrected “Spirit of Life” into the believers that He called His “little flock,” the water-baptized “remnant” that came out of Apostate Israel.

John 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost (“the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus”) (Rom 8:2a).

Christians are forever fully equipped with Christ’s “Spirit of life” in their human spirit, like tea in water.

1 Cor. 6:17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

John 3:6 born of the flesh is flesh (natural); and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

1 Cor. 2:14 But the natural man (soulish Christian) receiveth not the things of the Spirit of

God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know (Gk. ginosko, means “to come to know by experience, a moment of revelation”) them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Romans 8:9-11 ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Thereby, we have an innate 6th Sense of an Inner Knowing, by His indwelling Spirit. This kind of KNOWING is seen from the Greek word “eido.” This is the Spontaneous, Automatic, or Intuitive Spirit- Sense Knowing, just as we have the physical senses to see, smell, touch, taste, and hear.

We have a perception by “the spirit knowing what we need to know… Intuitively!

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see (Gk. eido, perceive) the kingdom (small “k” kingdom = spirit realm) of God.

How do Christian believers receive this ‘Sense Knowledge’?

The moment we first believed we were “regenerated” by the deposit of Christ’s Spirit into our spirit, giving us the Crucial, Primary, Awareness of His life and His will for us… guiding and empowering us.

1 John 4:13 Hereby know (eido, innately know) we that we dwell IN him, and he (Christ) IN us, because he hath given us of HIS (Christ’s) Spirit.

1 John 2:20 But ye have an unction (anointing) from the Holy One, and ye know (eido, innately know) all things.

1 Cor. 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is

of God; that we might know (eido, innately know) the things that are freely given to us of God.

1 John 5:20 And we know (eido, innately know) that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding (perception), that we may know him (ginosko, come to know Him experientially, revelation through study, preaching, etc.) that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

So then, we Intuitively have the very “Mind of Christ” (mind, Gk. “nous,” His ‘intellect’).

1 Cor. 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But ‘we have the mind (nous) of Christ.’ (His mind spontaneously works within our spirit, as an automatic ‘Spirit-sense knowing.’)

Example: This ‘Spirit-Sense Knowingguided, prompted, and restrained Paul in his walk.

Acts 18:5 And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.

Acts 16:7 ... they assayed (tried) to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not (would not let them alone).

Today we are to “walk in the Spirit,” which is to ‘walk according to boththe spiritand the word.”

Paul wrote; to be filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18) is to let the word dwell in you richly (to the full) (Col. 3:16)

Jesus said; “It is the spirit that quickeneth (makes alive); the flesh profiteth nothing: the WORDS that I speak unto you, they Are SPIRIT (spirit-words), and they are LIFE (Zoë, the eternal spirit-life of Christ). (John 6:63)

So now… “If we live (have life, Zoë, Christ’s life) in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25)

“This I say then, Walk in (accord with) the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust (desires) of the flesh. (Gal. 5:16)

Thus, ‘walking in accord with the Spirit’ applies and fulfills the life guidance of “the word of truth.”

The ‘Conscience of the spirit’ is the most commonly recognizable and relatable ‘Inner Sense of our spirit.

The Conscience functions in the spirit of all humans, even before salvation. It is ‘Gateway of the Heart.’

Genesis 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. <<< their Conscience was activated by the “Tree of the Knowledge of G &E.”

Romans 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their (the heathens) hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their hearts

Apostle Paul Lived by his ‘conscience.’
Romans 9:1I lie not, my Conscience also bearing me witness in (by) the Holy Ghost,

A Conscience kept cleanclears the way to … our Soul’s Heart.

The Light and Life of Christ flows through our purged Conscience into my soul’s mind, emotion and will.

Heb 9:14 …more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge (cleanse) your conscience (consciousness) from dead works (of sin and death) to serve the living God?

Titus 1:15 … but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind (of soul) and Conscience (of the spirit) is defiled (dirtied).

Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true (right) heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil (dirtied, hurtful) conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Hebrews 4:12 (KJV) For the word of God is quick (living), and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The Holy Ointment: All that we’ve gained of Christ came out of His death, burial and resurrection!

The Holy Ointment Applies to; 1) Our Death, and 2) Our New Life (Rom. 6:3-4)

The Old Testament Temple & “Vessels” … were Sanctified by … Holy Anointing with Holy Ointment

Exodus 30:26-32 And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony, And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense, And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot. And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy (set apart). And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons (Priest), and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office. And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations. Upon man’s flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you.

The Inner Anointing of “the Spirit” and “the word of truth,” are both of Christ’s All Sufficient “the Spirit”

1Jn 2:20-21 But ye have an unction (anointing) from the Holy One (Christ), and ye know (Gk. eido, discern) all

things. I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know (Gk. eido) it, and that no lie

is of the truth. 1Jn. 2:27 the anointing which ye have received of HIM abideth IN you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie…

The ‘Holy Anointing Ointment’ represents “the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus” AFTER Jesus was … fully Processed through suffering and death of the cross, and His subsequent burial, resurrection and ascension.

John 12:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat (humanity) fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

It’s ALL in the Holy Ointment of His LIFE that now Indwells You!

The elements in this Holy Ointment Oil come out of JesusSuffering, Death, Burial and Resurrection!

Exodus30:25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil. (“Ointment,” aromatic & sweet; “Compound” = a mixture of elements).

The Anointing Oil’s Elements Speak of the Sweetness & Effectiveness of Christ’s Death & Resurrection.

This Compound is a Five (5) Spice Anointing Oil consisting of these components seen in verses 22-25

Exodus 30:22-2522Moreover the Lord spake unto Moses, saying … 23Take thou also unto thee (4 FOUR) principal spices(Note the ‘3’ groups of ‘500 shekels’ = Triune God)

1.) “of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and”                                                            500 shekels

(Used to embalm the dead, ‘Myrrh’ represents Christ’s death)

Note Spices #2 & #3 are 500 shekels split in 2 as Jesus was broken/split on the cross in its dual aspects … … Representing the 1) His death (for sin and as our Old Adamic man), and 2) His New Life)

2.) “and of sweet cinnamon half so much, two hundred and fifty shekels,”                   250 shekels

(Represents the Sweetness of Jesus’ Death, curative of snakebite)                  PLUS

3.) “and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,”                                         250 shekels

(A reed from seed pod shooting out of mud Represents the Power of His Resurrection.)

4.)  24And of cassia five hundred shekels,                                                                     500 shekels

(An aromatic gum of the bark of a thorny tree, used as Snake repellent)

5.)  and of oil olive an (one) hin: (Represents the One (1) Divine Spirit God)

Today, we are THE Living TEMPLE of God; “… for ye are the temple of the living God (2 Cor. 6:16)

The Ointment of the Spirit Within Us Sets Us Apart – as Vessels… as His temple

The “Spiritual Sense Knowing” within Sets us Apart Inwardly, sanctifying us).

  • You should KNOW that you’re different from non-believers.
  • You should Know you’re Sanctified (set apart), you’re willing to obey to that ‘Sense Knowing’
