The Five Solas

THE FIVE SOLAS

A Study of the Source and Significance of

the Five Foundational

Doctrines of the Christian Faith

as recovered by

the 16th Century Reformers

1.      Sola Scriptura - "by the Bible ALONE" is the basis for Revelation of God's Eternal TRUTH of God for mankind. In the Bible we find God's inspired words and wording (context). (1Thessalonians 2:13)

2.      Sola Fide - "by Faith ALONE"; Faith in Christ and His cross Alone is the basis of our receiving salvation (Eph 2:8-9).

3.      Sola Gratia - "by Grace ALONE"; the "FREE GIFT" is the basis of salvation offered to all mankind, without works of any kind. (Romans 11:6).

4.      Solus Christus - "through Christ ALONE" as Savior; Christ's salvation is obtained by grace through faith ALONE. (Colossians 3:11b).

5.      Soli Deo Gloria - "ALL Glory to God ALONE"; for He Alone has done ALL. (Ephesians 3:21)

These "Five Solas" are five Latin phrases that succinctly summarize the five core Biblical truths as the critical doctrines of "the faith" of the Protestant Reformers of the 16th century. The "Five Solas" are truths as necessary to the prospering faith of believers today as they were then. They free the hearts of men and makes them securely held in God's love and grace.

The "Five Solas are the key elements of "the faith" that were mainly derived from the thirteen epistles (Romans - Philemon) that "Paul...the Apostle to the Gentiles" (Rom 11:13) wrote to the members of the Gentile "church, which is His body" (Eph 1:22b-23a, cf., 3:1-5)

The Apostle Paul laid "the foundation" (1Cor 3:10) of "the faith" of the preaching of "Christ" for "the body of Christ"; that foundation is;

"Christ Alone" as the core "SOLA,"

Referred to as "SOLUS CHRISTUS"
