Peace of Heart and Mind in the Midst of Apparent Hopelessness

By Arthur J Licursi

Here, in the verses below we have the Apostle Paul’s remedy for anxiety. Yet, for many it does not seem to work for peace in their “hearts and minds.” As we should know, if Scripture seems not to work as we see it, the problem is usually not with the Bible but rather with us and our approach to it. We will consider these verses in some detail and discuss why Paul’s words here do not seem to work for many Christians.

How Christians Deal with the Temptation to Fear

Today we see and hear of recessions, pandemics, and natural disasters along with daily anxieties, making us prone to fear. Fear can turn to panic in a matter of minutes or even seconds.

  • How should we as Biblically intelligized grace believers respond when fear comes?
  • What does Scripture advise us to do in turbulent times?

Our Apostle to the Gentiles of this age, Paul, gives us a very practical and comforting instruction for our anxieties that ought to govern how we approach our fears.

Instructions for Enjoying “the peace of God”

Paul here tells the Philippians how to deal with anxiety over life’s situations and circumstances.

“Be careful (anxious) for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

We Can Relax in Grace Truth

“Be careful (anxious) for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

“Be careful (anxious) for nothing”pray the Pauline way… and relax in God’s grace!

Key to Living Worry-free

Perhaps you know that sometimes rattlesnakes that are thought to be dead can still strike, bite, and kill you. Doctors in the southwest USA have a large number of patients admitted to hospitals each year suffering from bites from rattlers… thought to be dead. Sometimes the snakes were shot and their heads cutoff; but, the snake head retains a reflex action. In fact, one study showed that snake heads could still make striking-type motions up to sixty minutes after decapitation.
