Awareness of Our Temporary Earth

“And, Thou, O Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: they shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; and as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail (Hebrews 1:10-12 KJV).

On this so-called ‘Earth Day,’ let us not confuse the creation with the Creator!

On ‘Earth Day,’ people worldwide celebrate ‘environmental awareness.’ According to the secular, naturalistic worldview, our planet and its sun could last many more billions of years. They claim that we have done so much damage to our planet—climate change, overpopulation, deforestation, pollution, et cetera—that we must change our attitude toward (they use this heretical pagan term) “mother earth” and change our lifestyles before we destroy her and civilization as we know it!

You can sense the zeal in their message, can you not? While these people are sincere, and certainly none of us ought to abuse the natural world, they are wasting all of their time, energy, and resources on this temporary planet as it is.

Let’s be very clear that the Lord Jesus Christ placed man on the earth, especially the Garden of Eden, to “dress it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15). Adam was to take care of the Earth: he was God’s representative, God’s king on earth, having a divine commission to rule this planet for God’s glory (Genesis 1:26-28).

But it was not long, however, before Satan distracted mankind from understanding God’s purpose for him. As result of that Satanic infection of wrong thinking set in, Adam began to focus on himself, just like Satan. Mankind soon began to worship and serve the creature [mankind] more than the Creator (Romans 1:25).

Thus, began man’s continual downward spiral into utter spiritual ignorance. Man would continually worship himself, as we well know today. The utterly deceived humanistic man considers himself to be the god of his own life and world. But this will not stand.

The head text of this page, Hebrews 1:10-12 KJV, reminds us that, because of sin, this creation will pass away. The Lord Jesus Christ, however, will live forever, and we with himif we simply believe to receive Him and His resurrection life to dwell in us to make us a “new creature in Christ.

“Therefore if any man be in [union with] Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)

Why worship that which is temporary (man and the natural creation)? It makes no sense!

The Lord Jesus Christ gave humanity life, not the pagan goddess “mother earth.”

Environmental awareness? Indeed, we need to be aware that our earth and our human physical lives are temporary, and that God will one day recreate the earth and the heavens to be as “a new [Gk. kainos, recreated, refreshed] heaven and a new [Gk. kainos, recreated, refreshed] earth” (Revelation 21:1).

Thus, we look to the end of this age of sin and death to one of righteousness through His eternal life that indwells all genuine believers. Thus, we believers, as Christ’s ambassadors on earth at this time, expend our efforts in reaching out to the lost confused souls that they may know the truth and choose to enjoy the “new Heaven” as their eternal abode.

For our conversation [Greek, politeuma, citizenship] is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: 21  Who shall change our vile body [of sin, Rom. 6:6, 8:3], that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious [resurrection] body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. Philippians 3:20-21 (KJV)
