Christ’s Two Comings

Jesus’ here below quotes two sets of verses taken from Isaiah. Each set reveals His two comings to the Nation Israel… on earth, even though these two coming are separated by more than 2,000 years.

The verses below record Jesus’ words when He began His ministry on earth to the Nation Israel as “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus here in Luke 4:18-21 quotes Isa 61:1 – 2 (below) but He STOPS the quote, NOT quoting the 2nd half of Isaiah 61:2, which will take place about 2,000 years later, with His 2nd coming in wrath.

Luke 4:18-21 (KJV) The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

20 And he Closed the Book, and he gave it again to the minister, and Sat Down.

And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture (Isa 61-62a) fulfilled in your (Israel’s) ears.

Jesus did not complete the Isaiah quote below, which would have continued with words in Isaiah 61:2b concerning His later return in Vengeance.”

Isaiah 61:1-2a (KJV) The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;…
2a To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD,

2b and The Day of Vengeance of Our God; to comfort all that mourn;

Note in Isa 61:2b that He will one day come a 2nd time in Vengeance to save Israel and end the 7-year Tribulation, and then set up His Millennial Reign on earth.

Now note Isaiah 9:6-7 how these two verses indicate two ages and the two comings of Christ to earth.

Isaiah 9:6 concerns His 1st coming as Jesus of Nazareth, the babe born in a manger, to then die for the sins of the whole world as “the Lamb of God.”

Isaiah 9:6 (KJV) For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:7 (below) continues from Isaiah 9:6but it refers to Christ’s 2nd coming. This will take place more than 2,000 years later than His 1st coming of Isaiah 9:6. He will come the 2nd time as the King of Kings” to set up His Millennial Reign on earth, and then Eternal Kingdom on the New Earth.

Isa 61:7 (KJV) Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his KINGDOM, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even FOR EVER. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

During the more than 2,000 year gaps noted in these 2-part scriptures listed above, God inserted His secretly planned “the dispensation of “the grace of God” for the Gentiles. This gap in which we enjoy His grace today will end with the Rapture of “the body of Christ” when “the fulness of the Gentiles has come in” (cf. Rom 11:25). It is only then that Christ will return ‘in vengeance and wrath’ at His 2nd coming to save Israel.

Thus the ‘Rapture’ of “the body of Christ” and His 2nd coming are two distinctly different events that occur after His first coming to earth by His incarnation and birth as “the Son of man” to suffer and die as “the lamb of God” for the sins of the world. By the offering of Jesus Christ God reconciled all lost men to Himselfif they will only “receive Him” (Jn 1:12) as God’s propitiatory sacrifice, dying to pay the sin-debt of all men.
