The Law of the Spirit in Christ Jesus

“the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:2)

When one realizes his need of Christ and places his trust in Jesus Christ as his Savior he is justified before the court of God, only because Jesus’ death and righteousness are imputed or counted to him. A believer is reconciled to God by Christ's sacrificial offering of Himself. This is the judicial aspect of salvation. But Paul writes that there is "much more" than being reconciled to God.

"For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, Much More, being reconciled, we shall be Saved (Gk., sozo, Completed) By His Life. (Rom 5:10);  "...Ye are complete in Him..." (Col 2:10)

The moment we were saved something else happened, beyond having our sins freely forgiven. Then also Christ's "Spirit of life" regenerated us (Titus 3:5), giving with His life. So, the sinner who sincerely places his trust in Christ as Savior has his sins forgiven... and He is also given the "Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" to dwell within him as his new and eternal life. The "law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" is an unalterable, unchangeable operation of God in everyone who will trust Christ alone as their Savior.

"...Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." (Romans 8:9)

“He that hath the Son hath life….” (1Jn 5:12) “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life.” (Jn 3:36)

The word "life" in each of these verses I've noted is the Greek word "Zoë," meaning the "spirit life." This not the biological life (Greek "bios") or the psychological life (Greek "psuche"). In fact, "Zoë" in these verses refers to Christ's very own resurrected "Spirit of life," which is dispensed into the believer's own human spirit, never to depart or be separated from the believer.

When Jesus rose from the dead it was as the "life-giving spirit" (1Cor 15:45). Paul clearly tells us that "Now" the resurrected Lord Jesus is "that Spirit," - "Now the Lord is that Spirit..." (2 Corinthians 3:17a). He alone is the One who is "the life" (John 14:6).

The word "law," as in "the law of the sin and death" and "the law of the Spirit of Life," (Romans 8:2), is the  Greek word "nomos," meaning "method of regulation." Before we believed to receive Christ, we were regulated by the Sin spirit (Eph 2:2) - the "Law of Sin and death." Sin will ultimately bring forth physical death to our bodies. But now, having believed, we've received the "law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus." We're now made eternally alive, spiritually, not subject to eternal death. We're now to be regulated by Christ's "Spirit of Life" that indwells us, guiding us and empowering us from within, in our daily walk.

This also means if die physically we are assured that His resurrection life will raise us at the Rapture. The "Spirit of life" has indwelt us all this time since we first believed - whether we've at times subsequently failed Him or not. Having received Christ's literal "Spirit of Life," we are eternally mingled with His life such that we are now "one spirit" with His Spirit. "...he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. (1 Cor. 6:17). Just a tea is mingled with water and undividable, so is our union with Christ by "His Spirit in our spirit" (cf., Jn 3:6)

Adam forfeited his life by sin... unto death. It's a law, a fixed unchangeable law, that sin brings forth death (Rom. 5:12; 6:23; 1Cor 15:56). "Wherefore, as by one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and Death By Sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (Rom 5:12). This is the immutable "law of sin and death.

But, every believer has already died for their sin by placing their faith "in Christ." Each believer also has been given Christ's resurrection life by simultaneously receiving "the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus." The believer’s new life can never be forfeited, because this life was given to him as a gift, "by grace through faith (alone)" (Eph 2:8-9). This life is nothing less than the literal everlasting life of Christ.

Thus, “the law of the Spirit,” that is of the “life in Christ Jesus” has literally made the simplest believer free from the power of "the law of sin and death.” Believers are delivered from sin's penalty by Christ's death. They also are delivered from sin's power over them by Christ's resurrection life. They will one day, at the Rapture, be resurrected a He was, in their incorruptible "spirit-body" (1Cor 15:51-52).

Thus, the Apostle Paul could write; “The Law Of The Spirit, (That Is) Life In Christ, hath (already) made me free from the law of sin and death.”
