The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is not an ‘individual person’ of the Godhead as religious tradition teaches. Subjectively, the Holy Spirit is… the manifestation and actual bearer of the very life of God in Christ conveying the nature, will, powers, and character, all that God is... to usin Christ.”

Actually, the Holy Spirit is essentially neutral, not a self-directed self-expresser as a person. The Holy Spirit does not express itself as if it were ‘a person’ as most preachers claim. Listen to Jesus’ words.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth (the Spirit that is sent as the expression of Christ as the “truth”), is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall NOT speak of (or from) himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

The Holy Spirit is the invisible expression of the will, power and love of the God; “God is spirit” (Jn 4:24). When Jesus of Nazareth died and was resurrected a major change occurred. Christ who as “the word (Christ) became flesh,’ after His death and resurrection became the life-giving Spirit” (1Cor 15:45). Thus Paul wrote of this change here, saying Now the Lord (Jesus) is that Spirit… (2 Cor 3:17a (KJV). “Now” here means something is not as it previously was. Paul refers to the fact that “Jesus of Nazareth,” who was the “Son of Man” died and rose as “the Spirit of Christ.” Again, there is only One Spirit (Eph 4:4) of God.

Let’s now consider who the Holy Spirit is, and what is the Holy Spirit’s role in the believer’s life?

First, The Holy Spirit is the “One Spirit’ (Eph 4:4) of the ‘Godhead.’ God ‘the Father’ is in and one with His “Only Begotten Son.” Jesus, now as the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus” (Rom 8:2a) is revealed to us today by “the Spirit’ of wisdom and revelation” (cf. Eph 1:17) who dwells in and is one with every believer’s spirit.

The Bible gives us a clear picture of The Holy Spirit.

  • The Holy Spirit expresses and imparts the intellect of God, and mindset Christ (Philip 2:5) to us.

“But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, and the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but (except) the Spirit of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:10-11 (KJV)

  • The Holy Spirit gives us the sensory perceptive ability of Christ. Just as when someone does something that causes us sadness and grief, so we also produce a similar emotional response in the Godhead by the Holy Spirit when we may hurt others, reject Him or otherwise sin.

“… do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” (Eph 4:30)

  • The Holy Spirit communicates to us… the will and mind of God, which comes via to us “the gift of Christ” as “the Spirit of life” within us. The Apostle Paul thus describes the Spirit of God who wills, or determines how He distributes spiritual gifts to the believers… as the Godhead wills it.

“But all these (spiritual gifts of God) worketh that ‘one and the selfsame Spirit (of God),’ dividing to every man severally as he will. (1 Corinthians 12:11 (KJV)

Second, the Holy Spirit expresses all the attributes of God, being all-powerful, ever-present, and all-knowing. The Holy Spirit expresses the very “mind of Christ” in and through believers. Thus Paul wrote this.

“And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:” 1 Corinthians 2:4 (KJV)

Third, the Holy Spirit is the expression of God in Christ as the TRUTH or the literal reality of Christ to us and in us. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, and thus co-equal, co-existent, and co-eternal with the Father and the Son. (1 John 5) In I Corinthians 3:17 the word “Lord” is used to reference Yahweh. It says, “The Lord is the Spirit.” So the Holy Spirit is the expression, not as an independent ‘person of the Godhead’ as so many may say, but rather of the “One Lord.” Paul thus wrote; “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,” (Ephesians 4:4-5 (KJV)

The most amazing part of all of this; The Father and Son in their person expressed by the Holy Spirit dwells inside of every believer. Every believer has “the Spirit” of God within them… bearing the life of the Father and the Son to them. Note below how these three titles, “Holy Spirit,” “Spirit of God” and “Christ,” are used interchangeably as related to ‘all of God being in you’ because His “One Spirit” (Eph 4:4, above) is within you… as real the real, eternal, resurrected LIFE of Christ IN YOU.

“But you are not living the life of the flesh, you are living the life of the Spirit, if the [Holy] Spirit of God [really] dwells within you [directs and controls you]. But if anyone does not possess the [Holy] Spirit of Christ, he is none of His [he does not belong to Christ, is not truly a child of God]. 10 But if Christ lives in you, [then although] your [natural] body is dead by reason of sin and guilt, the (your human) spirit is alive because of [the] righteousness [that He imputes to you].” (Romans 8:9-10 (AMP)

The moment we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, He as the Spirt of life in Christ Jesus comes into our human spirit… born anew, regenerated. We are simultaneously baptized into “His body” and become one with Him... forever. We become God’s children, members of God’s family, when Spirit immediately takes up residence in our spirit.

But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.” (1 Corinthians 6:17 (KJV)

We become a living, walking, breathing temple and “the Spirit of God” who dwells inside of us. “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” (1Cor. 6:19)

So this means we have 24/7 perfect union with God and unlimited access to the Father by our being accepted in the beloved (Christ).” Thus we as believers are seen as being ‘holy and blameless in Him’ (Eph 1:3-4). It also means we have the power of the Spirit of the living Christ dwelling inside of us... to be expressed as “the righteousness of God in Him.”

If we need comforting, the “Spirit of Christ” as the comforter within us, is also the counselor of all counselors – He longs to comfort us in ways that are beyond any person, or any book, or counselor could ever do. If we need wisdom or strength, guess what? He, as the “Spirit of life” is in us has been made all things to us.

“But of him (God) are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption” (1 Corinthians 1:30 (KJV).

Living as a Christian doesn’t have to be difficult. The point of the Christian life is not about us following all the rules or trying hard to “be good.” Our life as Christians is about us as a saved soul abiding – living in a soul/spirit union with Christ (Spirit) in our spirit. Thereby the natural by-product of this is a life expressing all that Christ is within us, according to His will.

“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13 (KJV)

We don’t worship God through performance but by walking in accord with our union with Him.

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16 (KJV) “But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.” (Galatians 5:18 (KJV) “If we live (Sin we have life) in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." (Galatians 5:25 (KJV)

So we worship Him by naturally by becoming more and more of an expression of Christ. The Holy Spirit spontaneously bears us the very life, heart and personality of Jesus. We all need to learn more about the Holy Spirit and how the indwelling of “the Spirit of life in Christ” brings us intimacy with God.

I still believe in a Triune Godhead. The Triune Godhead could be seen in this way, metaphorically.

Consider how the Power Company brings its electrical power to you.

  • The Father may be considered as the ‘source,’ the generator; He is the generative power-source.
  • The Son is the ‘course’ by which the Father sends His power to us. Jesus Christ’s Cross then is as the wires that reach our home… delivering the riches and power of God… to us.
  • The Holy Spirit is as the electricity or ‘power’ of God that comes to us from the Father via the Son.

“… The last Adam (Christ) became the Life-Giving Spirit (1Cor. 15:45)

Thus, Paul wrote this of the Triune God.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion (fellowship) of the Holy Ghost, be (is) with you all. Amen.” (2 Cor 13:14 (KJV).

God’s “grace of the Lord Jesus Christ” issues out of the “love of God” and His love and grace are enjoyed by us through the instrumentality of “the Holy Spirit.”
