Primary Meaning - The New Jerusalem is God’s prophesied eternal dwelling with humanity on earth. It consummates the restored creation and divine communion between God and man on earth.

Old Testament Reference: Isaiah 60’s vision of God’s glory illuminating a restored Israel.

Hebrews 11:8-10 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:10 For he looked for a city [the Holy city New Jerusalem] which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

New Testament Fulfillment - Revelation 21:2-4, where the Holy city New Jerusalem descends from heaven to the earth, fulfilling God’s covenantal promise to Abraham and his lineage of Israel in the person of Christ as “the light” of the city. Isaiah 25:8 states, 'He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces.'

Revelation 21:2-4 And [John] I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.

By Contrast;

Some 21 years before God’s promise to Abraham and Israel concerning the Holy City New Jerusalem are fulfilled as seen above, … the members of today’s Spiritual Gentile “church, which is His body” of today’s Dispensational age of “the grace of God” will have been caught up from planet earth to dwell in “the heavenly [super-heavenly] places in Christ.” (Eph. 1:3).

Philippians 3:20-21 20 For our conversation [Old English for, citizenship] is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: 21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious [resurrection] body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

This will occur; “4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye [of His body] also appear with him in [heaven’s] glory.” Colossians 3:4
