Below is the question Philip asked of the Ethiopian prince as he sat reading from Isaiah’s prophecy (Acts 8:30), and it is a question which we should continually keep asking ourselves as we read the Holy Scriptures.

“And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?” (Acts 8:30 (KJV)

The Suffering of Not Knowing & Believing the Truth

The “spirit of man” is unique to mankind… deposited into man for God’s intended purpose.

Zech. 12:1 … the Lord ... formeth the spirit of man within him.

 “(Christ) In Whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3).

I’m writing of what I call the ‘sign-gifts.’ Jesus performed seven miracles as recorded in John’s gospel and it was said of the first, at Cana, “this was the beginning of ‘miracles’ (Gk. semeion, meaning, “signs”). Jesus spoke of “these signs” (Mk 16:17) that would follow His Jewish disciples as they preached “the gospel of the kingdom” to Israel only, as they were directed to by Jesus in Matthew 10:5-6.

Paul wrote "be not drunk with wine" but rather "be filled with the Spirit" (Eph 5:18). In contrast to a person may be "under the influence" of alcohol, Paul encourages believers to be "under the direct influence" of the indwelling "Spirit of Christ" and "redeem the time" (v16). This we do as a matter of choice, to yield or not yield to His Spirit moving within us.

The Word of God, the Bible, is God breathed or of "the Spirit of God." Proper study in dependence upon the Spirit therefore brings us to spiritual maturity and understanding  that is of "the Spirit of God." It does not require superior intellectual powers to understand these “deep things of God.”
