Understanding “The Heavenly Places” In Christianity

Definition and Significance

In dispensational Christian theology, "the heavenly places" refers to the spiritual realm of heaven “far above,” where God's presence and glory are fully manifested.

This concept is rooted in Ephesians 2:6, which states that believers are "seated with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus." This indicates a spiritual position of connection and authority that is theirs by their spiritual union with the Triune God in heaven “far above” (Eph. 1:21)

Paul confirms the destiny of the members of Christ’s spiritual “body” in Colossians 3:4. This Post-Acts Epistle concerns the members of the Post Acts “church” that Paul calls “the body of Christ.”

“When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in [heaven’s, cf. 3:1] glory.” Colossians 3:4 (KJV)

“And hath put all things under his [Christ’s] feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. Ephesians 1:22-23 (KJV)

The Present Reality for Believers

Being "seated in heavenly places" is not just a future promise; it is a present reality for Christians. This means that believers, through their faith in Christ, are spiritually united with Him and share in His resurrection life. This position signifies freedom from the dominion of sin and the world, allowing Christians to live with hope and purpose.

Implications for Daily Life While On Earth

  1. Spiritual Perspective: Christians are encouraged to focus on eternal values rather than temporary worldly concerns. This perspective helps in navigating life's challenges with faith and assurance.
  2. Empowerment: Understanding their position in heavenly places empowers believers to live out their faith actively, knowing they are supported by God's grace and power, while knowing the eternal end from the beginning.
  3. Hope and Assurance: The promise of being seated with Christ provides hope for the future and assurance of God's love and mercy, reinforcing the belief that they are part of a greater spiritual reality.

By embracing this understanding, Christians can cultivate a deeper relationship with God and a more profound sense of purpose in their lives.
